Are You Ready for the Rise of Boozy Water?

Hear me out: boozy…..water.

Perhaps that sounds like the drink of wellness extremists looking to catch a buzz. But the appeal of Funny Water, a new line of canned boozy waters, is surprisingly universal — they’re hyper-refreshing and highly sessionable; one of the sole non-carbonated, low-proof options amidst a sea of saccharine spiked sodas and high-energy hard seltzers.

Funny Water aims its appeal at those who don’t care about the bubbles

Is it time to forgo the hard seltzer and think flat?

That’s essentially the pitch behind Funny Water, a brand that launched last year and offers a non-fizzy (or flat) take on a canned alcoholic beverage (the Ready to Drink, or RTD, category in industry parlance). The product is the brainchild of veteran advertising and design professional PJ Loughran, and boating-industry entrepreneur Jake Vogel.

Is There Anything That Gen Z Won’t Drink?

It’s gonna be a hard seltzer summer … what with Covid’s wake and the Roaring ’20s, drink from home and e-commerce delivery, ready-mixed drinks and all-day drinking, thronged competition and celebrity stampedes, eco-pressures and supply-chain disruption — to say nothing of wellness, cannabis and a demographic landslide as a sober-curious Gen Z comes of age.

As distributors and retailers nationwide adjust to an oversaturated hard seltzer market, a new product has emerged as an alternative to carbonated alcoholic beverages. FUNNY WATER is a naturally flavored still water with no bubbles, featuring a 3.75% ABV, antioxidants and electrolytes to promote better hydration, at only 80 calories.

The 30 Best Beers, Hard Seltzers, and RTDs for Spring (2022)

What do you call hard seltzer without the bubbles? If you ask us, “Funny Water” is about as fitting as it gets. This non-carbonated alcoholic seltzer is ideal for those who prefer still to sparkling beverages, but also want to see what the hard seltzer craze is all about. The brand offers three refreshing flavors, and Watermelon was a favorite among VinePair’s tasting panel for its Jolly Rancher-esque flavor and day drinking appeal.

Funny Water marries booze and water for a new beverage

Water with a hint of flavor? That’s nothing new. Water with a hint of flavor and alcohol? Now, that’s funny—or, more so, Funny Water.

It’s not pretending to be a healthy drink, but it does offer a way to beat some of the downsides of other alcoholic beverages.

FUNNY WATER: How Non-Carbonated Alcoholic Water is Bursting Seltzer’s Bubble

Unlike the typical seltzer with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5%, FUNNY WATER fills a market void for non-carbonated alcoholic drinks with its 3.75% ABV. This percentage of alcohol allows drinkers to pace themselves more easily in comparison to other un-fizzy offerings such as wine; the next-lowest ABV for a non-carbonated beverage clocking in at around 14% ABV per glass.
